In Israeli society, opposition to the government has grown quickly, with diverse communities — from lawyers and former judges, to LGBTQ+ rights activists, to the high tech and finance sectors — all joining the mass anti-government protests, the largest the country has seen in over a decade. Meanwhile, Palestinians living under apartheid have remained defiant in the face of increased police, army and settler violence, including a recent deadly Israeli military incursion on Jenin refugee camp, followed by a deadly attack on Israeli settlers in East Jerusalem.
And yet, experts and analysts remain uncertain: are we witnessing a watershed moment in Israel-Palestine, or merely a continuation of a decades-long reality of Israeli impunity and Palestinian oppression? Are the anti-government protests a call to return to the “normal” status quo of occupation and apartheid, or could they turn into a true call for change across Israel-Palestine?
We’ll hear from Diana Buttu, legal expert, analyst and Policy Advisor to Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network; Orly Noy, Editor at Local Call; and Haggai Matar, Director of +972 Magazine and Co-Director of Local Call. The conversation will be moderated by Suhad Babaa, President & Executive Director of Just Vision and Co-Director of Local Call.
