The Syrian Arab Republic, after 13 years of proxy war, destabilisation, crippling sanctions and occupation, has fallen. Sectarian terrorist groups have captured Damascus. Israel and the Western imperialist powers are delighted, particularly in view of Syria’s longstanding role supporting resistance in Lebanon and Palestine, and its close strategic alignment with Iran, Russia and Hezbollah.
This webinar will address the reasons for the sudden collapse of the Syrian state; the political and social project of Syria’s new rulers; the implications for the Palestinian liberation struggle; the likely impact on the Resistance Axis in West Asia; and the state of the multipolar project.

Seyed Mohammad Marandi is a professor of North American Studies and teaches in the faculty of World Studies at the University of Tehran.
Vanessa Beeley is an independent journalist and photographer who has worked extensively in the Middle East – on the ground in Syria, Egypt, Iraq and Palestine, while also covering Yemen since 2015. Until recently, she was based in Damascus, Syria.
Ali Al-Assam is Managing Director of the NewsSocial Cooperative and member of the Friends of Socialist China Britain Committee.
Bahman Azad is an Iranian-American peace activist who has been involved in the struggle for peace and justice in the US and around the world since the 1970s. He is a former professor of Sociology and Economics, a representative of the World Peace Council at the United Nations, and a member of the Administrative Committee of the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC).
Dmitri Trenin is a RIAC Member. He graduated from the Military Institute (now Military University) in Moscow. Holds a Ph.D. degree in History. He is head of the scientific council, lead researcher and chairman of the Foreign and Security Policy program of the Carnegie Moscow Center.

Moderator: Radhika Desai is Professor at the Department of Political Studies. She is the Director, Geopolitical Economy Research Group at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. She is one of the founders of the International Manifesto Group.
