online – Skirting History: Reflections by Eva Moseley
November 30, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Eva Moseley was on the MAPA board from 1987, when she moved to Cambridge from Medford, until 2022. She was one of the founders of its Palestine/Israel Working Group, and one of the organizers of our Music for Peace concert series. In Medford, she was active in the Freeze movement, organizing her comrades to march in the militaristic Memorial Day parade, and glad to be represented by Ed Markey when he was first elected to the House.
She was born in Vienna and was able to emigrate with her secular Jewish family in 1939. Her memoir, Skirting History: Holocaust Refugee to Dissenting Citizen, details memories of her own life against the background of war and Cold War, with examples of how public events impinge on private lives. The story includes growing up among other lefty refugees, education at some of the “best” public and private schools, a pre-Roe abortion, a precipitous marriage, and an unsolved murder; here and there in among the sometimes grim story are jokes and even a few recipes. Socrates might not approve of Eva but he might approve of her attempts to live, and write about, an examined life.
At this Zoom event Eva will read excerpts from the book and engage in discussion with attendees. Register to attend.
