Claire Schaeffer-Duffy reports on an innovative peace initiative in Ukraine
In April, Ms. Schaeffer-Duffy traveled to Ukraine with a small, exploratory team for the Zaporizhzhia Protection Project (ZPP). This innovative peace initiative seeks to engage unarmed civilians in the protection of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant which is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. The facility sits on the frontlines of the Ukrainian war, and its shelling has been source of international concern. For months, Rafael Grossi, Director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has sought to establish a no-fire zone around the facility. As Ukrainian and Russian troops geared up for a spring offensive, the ZPP team met with Ukrainian civilians to ask them about non-military means for protecting the power plant and preventing a regional catastrophe.
Claire Schaeffer-Duffy is a member of the SS. Francis and Therese Catholic Worker in Worcester, MA. She is a freelance journalist, program director for the Center for Nonviolent Solutions, and member of MAPA’s Board of Directors.
