Tuesday December 10th, 2024
6:00pm – 7:30pm (ET)
Join the Latin America and Caribbean Working Group (LACWG) to learn about vital Human Rights Actions in Guatemala in 2024.
Grahme Russell of Rights Action, Canada and the US, will present Rights Action’s continuing, and decades long activities, directed toward supporting local communnities in their efforts to protect their natural resources from international, economic explotation esoecially extractive industores.
Ali Durbin, a coordinator of the Needham, MA Partnership with Santa Maria Tzeja, Ixcan will share the history, determination, and accomplishments of the village since 1986. In 1982 a massacre was carried out in Santa Maria, driving the villagers into internal exile in the mountains or external displacements to Mexico. In 1986, soon supported by a growing partnership with the Congregational Community of Needham, the villagers returned home and began shaping their own furture. Now nealry 40 years later the amazing Partnership continues. The short presentations will reflect two different modes of acting in solidarity with the justice seeking populations of Guatemala – stopping international exploittion of Guatemala resources and sistering partnerships with local people.
Derek Sexton, Coordinator of the LACWG, will serve as moderator as well as share his own experiences and inspiration from his 2024 accompaniment to Santa Maria Tzeja. Please join us for this dual focus on how to particpate in differing solidarity actions with the progressive people’s of Guatemala.
